At Waukesha Makerspace, we prioritize the well-being of our members and the responsible use of all resources. By following these guidelines, you contribute to a secure, productive environment that supports creativity, learning, and collaboration.
1. Know the Space:
- Familiarize yourself with the facility layout, including exits, emergency equipment, and first aid stations.
- Keep pathways clear of tools, materials, and personal belongings.
2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Eye Protection: Wear safety glasses or goggles when using tools that produce debris, dust, or sparks.
- Hearing Protection: Use earplugs or earmuffs around loud machinery.
- Gloves & Hand Protection: Wear suitable gloves for handling sharp materials, hot surfaces, or chemicals, ensuring they do not interfere with tool operation.
- Respiratory Protection: When working with materials that generate dust or fumes, use a dust mask or respirator.
- Other PPE: Additional items like face shields, aprons, or steel-toed footwear may be required for certain tasks.
- Proper Fit & Maintenance: Ensure PPE fits well, is in good condition, and stored properly. Replace damaged or worn-out PPE as needed.
3. Proper Tool Use & Training:
- Operate only the tools and equipment you’re trained and authorized to use.
- Follow posted instructions, heed warning labels, and request assistance if unsure about safe operation.
4. Member-Owned Tools & Equipment:
- Clearly label all personal tools and equipment with the owner’s name.
- Tools or equipment bearing a member’s name remain under that member’s discretion. Seek their approval before using these items, and respect any conditions they set regarding usage and scheduling.
- Handle member-owned tools with care, use them responsibly, and promptly report any damage or issues to their owner.
5. Material Handling & Storage:
- Store materials in designated areas to prevent falls, breakage, or obstruction of walkways.
- Clean up scraps, dust, and waste after you finish a task to maintain a tidy, hazard-free environment.
6. Chemical & Hazardous Materials:
- Follow all instructions and safety data sheets (SDS) for chemicals, adhesives, solvents, or other hazardous substances.
- Wear appropriate PPE and ensure proper ventilation when working with potentially harmful materials.
7. Respect Equipment & Signage:
- Do not remove, disable, or modify safety guards without explicit authorization.
- Observe warning signs, labels, and restricted areas, and follow all posted guidelines.
8. Report Issues & Incidents:
- Promptly inform a board member or staff if you encounter broken equipment, unsafe conditions, or are involved in or witness an accident.
- Immediate reporting helps maintain safety and ensures quick resolution of issues.
9. Work at Your Own Pace:
- Take time to set up properly, check tools for damage, and understand the task before beginning. Rushing can lead to mistakes and injuries.
10. Be Aware of Others:
- Keep conversations calm and avoid sudden movements around individuals operating machinery.
- Respect personal space and never distract someone engaged in a potentially hazardous task.
11. Know Your Limits:
- If you feel tired, dizzy, or unwell, pause your work and take a break. Your health and safety are always the top priority.
12. Emergency Procedures & Contacts:
- In an emergency (fire, severe injury, crime in progress), dial 911 immediately.
- If a non-emergency situation arises that requires prompt attention, notify a board member or volunteer on duty.
- Keep emergency contact numbers (such as local poison control or building management) readily available on-site.
By understanding and following these guidelines, including proper emergency procedures, PPE usage, and respecting member-owned tools, we can maintain a supportive, safe, and innovative makerspace environment.
