At Waukesha Makerspace, we are committed to minimizing waste and promoting sustainable practices in all our activities. By focusing on recycling, reusing materials, and reducing our environmental impact, we aim to support both our community and the planet.
Recycling Guidelines:
We encourage all members to follow these guidelines when disposing of waste:
- Separate Recyclables: Use designated bins for paper, plastics, metals, and other recyclable materials. Follow any posted signage for sorting rules.
- E-Waste Disposal: Place broken electronics, cables, and batteries in the e-waste collection bins for proper recycling. Do not dispose of these items in regular trash bins.
- Chemical & Hazardous Waste: Notify a board member if you need to dispose of chemicals, solvents, or other hazardous materials. Never pour them down drains or throw them in trash bins.
Reusing Materials:
- Scrap Stations: Check the scrap bins for reusable materials, such as wood, metal, or fabric remnants. Members are welcome to contribute excess materials to these stations for others to use.
- Project Donations: If you have leftover materials from a project, consider donating them for future use by fellow makers. Ensure items are clean, safe, and usable.
- Creative Repurposing: Explore ways to repurpose materials creatively in your projects to reduce waste and save resources.
Reducing Environmental Impact:
- Energy Efficiency: Turn off machines, lights, and other electrical devices when not in use. Help reduce the facility’s energy consumption by being mindful of your usage.
- Minimal Packaging: Bring materials in reusable bags or containers, and avoid single-use packaging when possible.
- Sustainable Materials: Opt for eco-friendly materials, such as recycled filament for 3D printing, FSC-certified wood, or biodegradable options, when available.
Sustainability Education:
- Workshops: Attend sustainability-focused workshops to learn techniques for reducing waste and incorporating green practices into your projects.
- Community Sharing: Share your ideas and knowledge about sustainability with other members through events, the Discord server, or informal conversations.
Member Responsibility:
- Ensure proper disposal of your waste, and leave workstations clean and free of debris.
- Help educate and remind others about recycling and sustainability practices. A small effort by every member makes a big difference.
By working together to recycle, reuse, and reduce, we can build a sustainable makerspace that respects the environment while fostering creativity and innovation. For questions about recycling or sustainability, please contact a board member or post in the appropriate Discord channel.
